Step-by-step guide to creating your first CV
Step 1: Sign Up
Create a NeonCV account with email, Google, or another supported provider (Clerk handles authentication).
Step 2: Create a Job Profile (Optional but recommended)
Go to Job Profiles in the sidebar and create a profile describing your skills, experience, and target role. You can also import from an existing CV/PDF via the AI import feature. See Job Profiles.
Step 3: Enter Job Context
On the home page (Generate CV), paste a job description or describe your target role in the text area.
Step 4: Select a Job Profile
Choose a job profile from the dropdown to tailor content to your profile.
Step 5: Configure Advanced Parameters
- Design Style: Choose from preset styles or customized template settings.
- Length: Single page or two pages.
- Language: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch.
- Paper Size: A4, Letter, or Custom page dimensions.
- Match Mode: Controls tailoring strength.
- Custom Directives: Provide high-priority prompts/rules to guide the AI formatting.
Step 6: Generate
Click Generate. The AI produces a complete CV and renders it as a PDF preview.
Step 7: Refine & Customize Layout
Use the AI Edit prompt or reorganize layout sections with drag-and-drop handles. Customize themes, spacing, fonts, backgrounds, and display features in the design sidebar. Use the mobile preview button to check layout responses on smaller screen sizes.
Step 8: Download
Click the download button to save your CV as a PDF.
